Converting between meters and feet is one of the most common everyday conversions — for height, rooms, distances and DIY. The maths is simple once you know the factor, and a converter removes the guesswork entirely. Here's the formula, a quick chart, and a tool that handles this plus every other everyday unit.

The formula

One meter equals about 3.28084 feet. So to convert meters to feet, multiply by 3.28084. To go the other way, one foot is exactly 0.3048 meters, so multiply feet by 0.3048 to get meters. For example, 5 meters times 3.28084 is about 16.4 feet, and 10 feet times 0.3048 is 3.048 meters. The Unit Converter does this instantly and lets you swap the direction with one tap.

Quick meters-to-feet chart

  • 1 m = 3.28 ft
  • 1.5 m = 4.92 ft
  • 1.7 m = 5.58 ft
  • 2 m = 6.56 ft
  • 5 m = 16.40 ft
  • 10 m = 32.81 ft
  • 100 m = 328.08 ft

For heights, remember a foot has 12 inches — so 1.7 m (5.58 ft) is about 5 feet 7 inches.

Feet and inches for height

Because people give height in feet and inches, the decimal part of a feet value is a fraction of a foot, not inches. Multiply the decimals by 12 to get inches: 5.58 ft becomes 0.58 times 12, about 7 inches, so 1.7 m is about 5 feet 7 inches. The converter shows the precise decimal; then a quick times-12 gives the inches.

One tool for every unit

Meters and feet are just the start. The same Unit Converter handles length (cm, mm, km, inches, miles, nautical miles), plus weight (kg, pounds, ounces), temperature (Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin), area, volume (US and UK gallons) and speed (km/h, mph, knots). For photo and print sizes in centimetres, the resize in cm tool is a companion.
